Obituary for Carl Force Riley

Carl Force Riley, 79, resident of 6514 Hwy 178 South, Ninety Six, husband of Norma Jean Teal Riley, died Friday, March 2, 2018, at Self Regional Medical Center.

Born in Saluda, SC, December 8, 1938, he was a son of the late Eugene Petus and Pearl Force Riley. He was employed with Greenwood Mills for 24 years until he joined the U.S. Postal Service as a Postal Carrier where he retired after more than 31 years. He also received the honor of being named Mail Carrier of the Year. He owned and operated Riley Auto Sales for 36 years and had a love for old cars.

He was a volunteer firefighter for the Ninety Six Fire Department for over 40 years and was an active member of First Baptist Church of Ninety Six.

Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are, a daughter, Donna Matthews (Houston) of Ninety Six and step daughter Laura Held (Jim) of Ohio; a step son, Kenny Downing (Jean) of Greenwood; a brother, Tommy Riley (Clara) of Saluda; seven grandchildren, Brittany Carter, John Carter, Luke Downing, Hannah Matthews, Geordyn Matthews, Max Held and Sam Held; two great-grandchildren, Emily Kay and Ioma Held. He had two beloved dogs, Frosty that he takes with him and Lucy he leaves behind.

Mr. Riley was predeceased by a step-daughter, Jan Dodgen; a step-son, Keith Davenport; three brothers, Joseph Riley, Horace Riley and Maxey Caldwell; five sisters, Rachel Wise, June Lake, Fannie Mae Vancant, Catherine Caldwell and Berley Miller.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 PM Tuesday, March 6th at First Baptist Church of Ninety Six with the Rev. Chuck Sprouse officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be, John Carter, Luke Downing, Todd Calhoun, Tim Riley, Leon Jay, Trent Jones and Skeeter Minor. Honorary escort will be, Greg Brown, Calvin Kinard, George Wood, Jessie Howard, Bobby Grogan, Allen Fortner, Neil Lomax, Michael Kingsmore, Danny Ballentine, Jeff Jones, Darrell Hamlett and Brett Jones.

The family is at their respective homes and will receive friends at Blyth Funeral Home on Monday from 6 to 8 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to the Greenwood Humane Society at PO Box 49776 Greenwood, SC 29649.
