DAN BYERS

Daniel Lee Byers, husband of Jane Carroll Byers, passed peacefully on Sunday, October 1, 2017 at his home in Cedar Lake in Greenwood. He was 84 years old.

Born on May 29, 1933, in Greenville, SC, Dan was the son of the late Deaver O. and Ailene Ledbetter Byers.

Dan graduated from Parker High School in 1951 where he excelled in sports. He received the Waddy Anderson Athlete Award, was named South Carolina’s Outstanding Senior Football Player and South Carolina’s Most Valuable Football Player. He was selected for the South Carolina All State Team, All Southern Team, and competed for South Carolina in the Shrine Bowl. After multiple offers, Dan accepted a full football scholarship to Vanderbilt University where he was a four-year Letterman. Dan earned his Bachelor of Engineering degree from Vanderbilt in 1956 then served his country honorably in The United States Army. He went on to complete a course of study at The University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business in 1979.

Dan began his professional career in 1956 with Mobil Oil Corporation in Oklahoma. He was a civil engineer for the US Army, a project manager for GE Moore Company, President of Dan Byers Construction, and Division President of Ballenger Corporation in Greenville. Dan was founder and President of Good Water Incorporated in Greenville, South Carolina from 1985 until his retirement. He was a respected Arbitrator and appointed to the Panel of Arbitrators with the American Arbitration Association where he also served as Chairman of Dispute Resolution Services for the Association. He served as chairman of the Public Utilities Division with Associated General Contractors and as a member of the South Carolina Law Institute.

Dan attended First Baptist Church of Greenwood where he was a member of the Carpenter Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. He was a long-standing member of the Greenwood Country Club and the Senior Golf Group where he played golf weekly with a regular group of friends since 1958. Together they shared a love for the game and enjoyed many trips abroad to Scotland, England, and Ireland to play.

Mr. Byers is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years, Jane Carroll Byers, and their children Beth Adams and her husband Mike of Greenwood, Daniel L. Byers, Jr. and his wife Kristi of Greenville, and Lindy Felix and her husband Nick of Hilton Head Island. His sister Edith Byers Brooks and her husband Emmett Brooks also live in Greenwood. Dan was affectionately referred to as the “Legend” by his eleven grandchildren: Lindsay Blair and her husband David, Michael Adams, Daniel Adams and his wife Paige, Brooke Byers, Lee Byers, John Byers, Isabelle Byers, Sarah-Parker Martin, Jack Felix, Camille Felix, Elizabeth Felix; and one great-grandchild, Eden Jane Beam.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 4, 2017, at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Tony Hopkins officiating. The family will greet friends following the service. A family burial will be at Edgewood Cemetery prior to the service.
