Obituary for Eloise Lollis Zimmerman

Eloise Lollis Zimmerman, 100, widow of the late Samuel Herbert Zimmerman, Jr., died Monday, April 2, 2018, at Wesley Commons Healthcare Center. Born in Columbia, S.C., on January 7, 1918, she was the eldest daughter of William Bernhardt Lollis and Annetta Eloise Rodgers Lollis. Mrs. Zimmerman grew up in Columbia where she and her family were devoted members of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church. She attended Columbia city schools. While a student at Columbia High School, she achieved many honors including membership in The National Honor Society and took First Place Medal in the statewide South Carolina Public Speaking Competition. She attended the University of
South Carolina, and later worked for the Columbia Record newspaper before marrying Samuel Herbert Zimmerman, Jr., also of Columbia. In 1946, after the completion of Mr. Zimmerman 's naval service during World War II, the family moved to Greenwood. There she devotedly reared her two children and engaged enthusiastically in many church, civic, and social activities. Mrs. Zimmerman was always a cheerful volunteer for church and charities, giving freely of her time and talents to the community. She was a communicant of The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection for over sixty years, serving in numerous capacities as long as health and age allowed. She taught Sunday School, served on and chaired the Altar Guild, worked for and chaired the annual ECW Bazaar, and with her husband served as counselors for the Episcopal Young Churchmen. She was a past President of the P.T.A. at Blake School and Southside Junior High School. She was named to the Board of Directors of the Y.M.C.A., serving as Secretary. She was a charter member and past President of the Danse de
Noel Assembly, seeing her daughter and all three of her granddaughters presented at the Assembly.

Mrs. Zimmerman was a member of the McKissick Study Club, the Tulip Garden Club, the Supper Club, the Nine O'clock Dance Club, and the Greenwood Country Club. She was an avid bridge player from the age of twelve and enjoyed being active in several clubs until her ninetieth year.

Mrs. Zimmerman was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was predeceased by her husband of more than fifty years, Samuel Herbert Zimmerman, Jr., and her sister "Peggy", Sarah Elizabeth Lollis Hook, of Columbia, S.C. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Samuel Herbert Zimmerman III and Scott Kendall Zimmerman of Greenwood, S.C.; her daughter and son-in-law, Annetta Zimmerman Elliott and Dr. C. Dale Elliott of Birmingham, Al.; her granddaughters Leila Kendall Zimmerman and Ellen Zimmerman Jones (Thomas) of Greenwood, S.C.; her granddaughter Dr. Eloise Arnold Whisenhunt (Ted) of Young Harris, Ga.; her great grandchildren Nora Scott Jones of Greenwood ,S.C., James Huckabee Whisenhunt and Eloise Lollis Whisenhunt of Young Harris, Ga.; and beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.

Family visitation will be from 11:00 A.M. to 11:45 A.M., Tuesday, April 10, 2018, at Blyth
Funeral Home, followed by a family graveside service at 12:00 noon at Greenwood Memorial Gardens, officiated by the Rev. Nicholas Beasley of The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection.

The family wishes to thank Mrs. Zimmerman's devoted doctors, nurses, and caregivers at Wesley Commons Health Care Center.
