Obituary for James Grady Strom, Sr.


James Grady Strom, Sr., 93, husband of Martha Burnett Strom, died Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at Hospice House.

Born in McCormick, June 6, 1924, he was a son of the late Wilbur Milton Strom and Winniford Clinkscales Strom. Mr. Strom was a graduate of McCormick High School, a 1950 graduate of Clemson University and was a US Army Veteran of World War II. He retired from Greenwood Mills after 34 years of employment.

His greatest joy was a large and loving family. He and his wife were devoted to each other and were blessed with sixty-seven years of married life. Their life together centered around family and faith. Grady loved nature and had a passion for gardening and collecting seashells. He most enjoyed sharing his flowers and collections with others.

A member of First Baptist Church, he was also a member of the Carpenter Sunday School Class and formerly served as Chairman of Deacons. He was also a member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club, the American Legion and the Men’s Garden Club.

Surviving in addition to his wife are his five children, Grady Strom, Jr. and wife Jamie of Atlanta, Sally Baggett and husband Steve, Claudia Burch and husband Jay and Susan Smith and husband Eric, all of Greenwood and Sharon Ellis and husband David of Newport News, VA; thirteen grandchildren, Stephen Baggett, Elizabeth Riddle, Sara Bryan, Emmie Newman, Catherine White, Anna Burch, Caroline McCormick, Erin Smith, Robin Smith, Josh Smith, Zach Ellis, Beth Ellis and Ethan Ellis along with ten great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Saturday from the First Baptist Church with Dr. Tony Hopkins officiating.

Private burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens prior to the service.

Honorary escort will be members of the Carpenter Sunday School Class.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.
