Obituary for John Horace Benjamin

John Horace Benjamin, 66, resident of 108 Bedford Road, passed away Sunday, February 25, 2018, at his home, surrounded by his family.

Born in Columbia, February 25, 1952, he was the son of the late William Horace and Mildred Loftis Benjamin. He considered Abbeville to be his hometown as he was a 1970 graduate of Abbeville High School. He had many lifelong friends from Abbeville and fond memories of growing up there. He had special memories of Abbeville First Baptist Church, Greenville Street Elementary School, and the Abbeville High School Marching Band.

John was a long-time member of Calvary Chapel in Greenwood and had special ties to Ninety Six First Baptist Church and Rice Memorial Baptist Church. He was a dedicated Christian who loved his Lord.

John managed the Piggly Wiggly in Ninety Six early in his work career. He made many friends among the residents of Ninety Six. Even after he changed careers, the people of Ninety Six held a special place in John’s heart. John was employed for twenty-seven years with US Foodservice. In that capacity he serviced businesses across the Lakelands selling wholesale food.

John had many interests, but his family was the center of his life, and he took great joy in spending time with them. In recent years, he felt extremely blessed to become a “Pop”, and enjoyed his grandchildren very much. John was a life-long Clemson Tiger fan.

Surviving are his wife, Susan Glasby Benjamin, of the home; son, Matthew Benjamin and wife, Emily and grandson, Easton of Abbeville; son, Michael Benjamin and wife Heather and granddaughter, Carley of Anderson; and son, Mark Benjamin and wife, Blair and grandson, John Brooks of Greenwood; his sister, Susan B. and husband Mike Bishop of Greenville; and a large extended family.

Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 pm Tuesday at the Ninety Six First Baptist Church with Rev. Chuck Sprouse and Rev. David Evans officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Bill Glace, Ben Glace, Bryan Glace, Grayson Jefferies, Josh Lott, Wayne Stevenson, Tim McCurry, Benji Bishop and Chris Bishop.

Honorary escort will be present and past representatives of US Foodservice.

The family is at the home in Wellington Green and will receive friends at Ninety Six First Baptist Church from 2 to 3 Tuesday afternoon.

The body is at Blyth Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 1:30 Tuesday afternoon.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Greenwood Christian School, 2026 Woodlawn Road, Greenwood, SC 29649.
