Obituary for Lonnie Frank Smathers

Lonnie Frank Smathers, 70, resident of Greenwood, died Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at the McCormick Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in McCormick.

Born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, July 21, 1947, he was a son of the late Frank Edward and Edith Theresa Metze Smathers. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School, class of 1965, a forty-five year (Life-time) employee of the Index-Journal and a former member of the Greenwood County Writer’s Guild. He was an active member of the North Greenwood Church of God.

Surviving are two brothers, Jerry Smathers (Debbie) of Greenwood and Kenneth Smathers of McCormick; a sister, Karen Landers (Roger Blackstone) and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, George Allen Smathers.

A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 3:00 PM Sunday, March 25th at North Greenwood Church of God with the Rev. Al Kissiah officiating.

The family is at their respective homes and will receive friends following the Celebration of Life Service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to North Greenwood Church of God, 2274 Montague Ave. Ext., Greenwood, SC 29649.
