Obituary for Marcia F McKee

Marcia was born March 12, 1936 into a home where she was lovingly raised by her grandmother in Greenwood. Although they felt the personal, financial and emotional effects of World War II, they had each other, and various family members helped support them.
Due to the uncertainty she experienced in her early years, Marcia worked diligently all her life to ensure that she had family and a secure home. The first great step in this journey was her marriage to Bruce McKee – her loving husband of nearly 65 years. Along the way, they added a daughter, Laurie Mills (Steve), a son, Eric (Michelle), and nine grandchildren – Emily (Daniel) Mills, Shannon (Matt) Harvey, Anna (Ryan) Davidson, Eric, Jr., Catie, Erin, Savannah, Isaac and James. In later life her family expanded once again when she connected with a sister, Saundra Helms, of Marietta, GA, and her loving family.
Marcia began working as a teenager, excelling at all she undertook including graduating with honors from Greenwood High School a year after her marriage. She served as the office manager for the surgical practice of Drs. William S. Brockington and Stanley C. Baker and retired after working there 25 years.
Volunteering enabled Marcia to share her talents with her church and community – and to continue to grow her family. She spent countless hours teaching Sunday School and mission studies. Individuals with the local Literacy Council and an English as a Second Language ministry benefited from her skills and compassion. Throughout her nearly 70 years at Coronaca Baptist Church, she served in almost every role available to her. After retirement, she volunteered for more than 7500 hours at Self Regional Hospital in many volunteer services. She served as President of the Auxiliary at Self Regional and then went on to serve as the President of the South Carolina Hospital Auxiliary Association.
Those who knew and loved Marcia knew her to be dedicated, hard-working, strong-willed, creative, generous and fun-loving. In recent years, Alzheimer’s impacted her memory but did not change the loving core of who she was to her friends and her family.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11AM Thursday at Coronaca Baptist Church with Rev. Todd Polatty and Rev. Drew Gunter officiating. Burial will follow in Bethlehem Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Mark Hamm, James Berley, Jim Coursey, Matt Harvey, Eric McKee,Jr. and Isaac McKee.
Honorary escort will be members of the Ruth Fidelis Sunday School Class.
The body is at Blyth Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 9:30 Thursday morning. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11AM at the church.
Memorials may be made to Coronaca Baptist Church, 300 Hwy. 246 N., Greenwood, SC 29649.
