Obituary for Mary Jane Smith Thompson

Mary Jane Smith Thompson, 83, entered eternal life on April 8, 2018. She was a retired home economics teacher from Greenwood School District 50, spending her entire tenure at Northside Junior High School. Mrs. Thompson took great delight in greeting her former students. She devoted her life to others through the gift of teaching. She loved attending social functions and fellowship with friends and family, always dressed for the occasion in her bright colors. She was an avid Alabama, Clemson, and Greenwood High School fan. She was preceded in death by her husband William Gilbert Thompson, her special friend Ray Bowick, and her parents Henry David Smith and Ruby Stewart Smith.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, William David Thompson (Sharon) and John Smith Thompson (Pam), eight grandchildren, Brooke Thompson, Spartanburg, SC, Kyle Reese (Natalie), Rock Hill, SC, Nick Thompson (Hayden), Tara Cannon (Colby), Sarah Thompson, Mary Kathryn Thompson, Pami Thompson (fiiancee Jacob Johnson), and Jacob Thompson, all of Greenwood, and 5 great grandsons, Jordan Thompson and Kirkland Thompson, Harlin Thompson, Maddox Cannon, and Isaiah Maggiacomo, all of Greenwood..

Born July 1, 1934 in Northport, Alabama, Mary Jane was a 1951 graduate of Tuscaloosa County High School in Northport, Alabama, graduating at the age of 16. She was a 1955 graduate of the University of Alabama, holding a Bachelor of Arts degree in Home Economics Education. She began her career as a Home Demonstration Agent for Alabama Polytechnic Institution (Auburn University) from 1955-1957, traveling to rural Alabama schools teaching cooking, sewing, and home arts. While in Pickens County Alabama she met and married William Gilbert (Bill) Thompson in 1957. They moved to Pensacola, FL with Bill working for Chemstrand after leaving the Air Force. Mary Jane taught for one year in the public schools in Pensacola and was a substitute teacher the next year after having her first son, David. The family moved to Greenwood in 1960 with Monsanto, along with 51 other families to begin the new Monsanto operation in Greenwood. She began her teaching career in 1960 and retired from Northside Junior High School in 1988. She enjoyed a 31 year teaching career in three states. She has been a member of Main Street United Methodist church since 1968 and was a member of the Bible Sunday School Class.

Funeral services will conducted 10 AM Thursday at Main Street United Methodist Church with Rev. James McCoy-Bruce and Rev. Martha Jane Meredith officiating.

Active pallbearers will be Kyle Reese, Nick Thompson, Jacob Thompson, Colby Cannon, Jacob Johnson, Jeff Ellison, Billy Snider and Joe Bell.

Honorary escort will be Gary Roper, Homer Sears, Joebie Adams, Jim Garner, Keith Smeal, Frank Pruett, Dennis Aliffi and Ernie Wilson.

The family is at the home in Idlewood and will receive friends at Blyth Funeral Home Wednesday evening from 6 until 8.

Graveside services will be conducted 12 Noon central time Friday at Jennings Chapel Methodist Cemetery in Northport, Alabama with Rev. Matt Reed officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Main Street United Methodist Church c/o Ramp Fund, 211 Main Street N., Greenwood, SC 29646 or to Greenwood High School Athletic Booster Club, P.O. 50741, Greenwood, SC 29649.

Her calling was to sow love into the lives of all those around her, her vocation was to teach, and in so doing she touched the lives of families in the Greenwood community for multiple generations. Her legacy includes a family that she led, served, and loved with all her heart as well as a community of former students that have become wonderful husbands, wives, fathers, and mothers.
