Nicholas Jones

Nicholas Dyer Jones, 75, husband of Valeria Anne Centers, passed away Thursday December 14, 2017 at Self Regional Medical Center.

Born June 12, 1942 in Portland OR, he was a son of the late Robert Dyer and Virginia Claire Sommer Jones. Nicholas was raised in the Hollywood/Grant Park district where he attended Fernwood Grade School and was a graduate of Grant High School. He earned his BS degree from Portland State College. There he met his wife and in 1970 they moved to a village in southern Germany. Nick worked for the US Government in Munich. He and his wife traveled extensively throughout Europe. In 1976 he and a partner founded All Weather Home Improvement Company in Portland. In 1997 his wife and he relocated to Arizona where they worked at Grand Canyon National Park. Afterwards they moved to Colorado Springs to be near their daughter Sarah, and finally in 2001 moved to South Carolina to be closer to another daughter, Glynnis. Nick enjoyed many family activities and had a firm faith in Christ.

He is a member of South Main Baptist Church and was a former member of the First Baptist Church of Charleston.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 53 years are two daughters, Sarah Battig of Colorado Springs, CO, and Glynnis (Benjamin) Scurry of Greenwood, SC. Seven grandchildren, Ridley Scurry, Valeria Scurry, Hunter Battig, Lydia Scurry, Dylan Battig, Nancy Scurry and Atticus Scurry. He leaves a brother, Michael St. John (Yvette) of Vancouver, WA, two sisters, Stephanie (Rick) Dwyer and Roxanne Jones of Portland, OR as well as an aunt, Mary Sommer of Portland, OR. He is also survived by many cousins, nephews and nieces.

A Celebration of Life will be held at South Main Baptist Church on Tuesday, December 19 at 2:00 P.M. with Dr. Toby Frost officiating. Following the service, the family will briefly receive friends at the church.
