Obituary for Temple McLain Lamar

Temple McLain Lamar, 90, husband of Nell Eddy Lamar, resident of Ninety Six, SC died peacefully on Sunday, 29, 2017.

Temp was born in Greer, SC to Beatrice McElrath and Temple Lamar, Sr. He was preceded in death by his brother Charles Richard “Dick” and his granddaughter, Caroline Amanda Sherrill
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Nell Eddy Lamar; three children, Rossie Corwon (Mike) of Greenwood, Mary Sherrill (Kirk) of Davidson, NC, and Robert Lamar (Carol) of Burlington, NC; also surviving are four grandchildren, Mike and Jeff Corwon, Sarah and Kate Lamar, and seven great grandchildren, and he wanted to recognize a nephew whom he knew as his own, John Ivester.

He began working at Southern Brick with his father, driving a brick truck at 13, left home at 15 to work at the Mississippi Shipyards. He joined the Navy at 17 to fight in World War II. He was honorably discharged as a Seaman First Class, August 1946 after serving on the USS Samaratan in the Asian Pacific arena. Following his duty in WWII he returned to Ninety Six, ran a family Esso station, then retired from his long-time employment with Fluor-Daniel.

Temp was a faithful member of St Paul United Methodist Church. He was the last surviving charter member of the American Legion Post #103, and a member of the Voiture Local # 435 of the Forty and Eight, the Lions Club, and a lifelong committed blood donor. He served as a commissioner for Ninety Six Commission of Public Works for 18 years.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing, but his passion was golf. He enjoyed his retirement duties at Star Fort National Golf Club, where he was a founding member. He loved his family and was a selfless and humble man, serving the Lord, his country, and his community.

The service will be held 12 Noon Thursday, November 2 at St Paul United Methodist Church.

The family will be receiving friends in the Fellowship Hall at the church prior to the service from 11- 12 Noon. A graveside service will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Bobby Stoudemire, Ned Johnson, Paul Johnson, Richard Shealy, Mike Shealy, Buck Griffin, Bruce Werts and Harry Berry.

Honorary escort will be the American Legion Post # 103.
